Chiropractic Helps in Prevention of Recurring Ear Infections.

In the October 1998 issue of the Ladies Home Journal appeared an article entitled, “Chiropractic Adjustments for Chronic Ear Infections.” This article reviewed several studies showing the effectiveness of chiropractic care for preventing re-occurring ear infections known as Otitis Media or OM.
According to the article, reoccurring ear infections account for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States. Sometimes these infections are due to bacteria and sometimes these are due to a virus. The most common medical care for this situation has been antibiotics, even though antibiotics have no effect on viruses. While the article mentions that the antibiotic may be effective in an acute bacterial infection, they do nothing to stop repeat infections. Research and statistics is now showing that repeated use of antibiotics is contributing to future infections by creating drug-resistant infections. The surgical approach has met with little long term results as the “tubes” placed in children’s ears often come out and usually require a child to be put under general anesthesia to do the surgery.

The article in the Ladies Home Journal states, “Chiropractic care is thought to prevent recurrent infections by correcting misalignments (called subluxations) and allowing normal fluid drainage from the middle ear.” What the article took special note of was that 6 months after the chiropractic care was given to the children in the study, 80 percent had not suffered a recurrence of ear infections.

In closing the article did make a profound statement. They made a recommendation to parents on this subject. “If your child is between ear infections and his doctor suggests ear-tube surgery, ask if you can try chiropractic treatment first.” While we agree with that sentiment, we suggest you not wait for a period between episodes, and you don’t have to “ask” permission from any other doctor to seek chiropractic care. As the sneaker company said, “just do it!”

“Chiropractic Care of 401 Children with Otitis Media: A Pilot Study”

Found in the March 1998 edition of Alternative Therapies and authored by Fallon and Edelman.
(Conclusion) “There is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustment and the resolution of otitis media for the children in this study, which can serve as a starting point from which those in the chiropractic profession can examine their role.”

Since the flu pandemic was declared, there have been several so-called “vaccine experts” coming out of the wood work attempting to justify the effectiveness of vaccines. All of them parrot the same ridiculous historical and pseudoscientific perspectives of vaccinations which are easily squelched with the following 9 questions.

Claim: The study of vaccines, their historical record of achievements, effectiveness, safety and mechanism in humans are well understood and proven in scientific and medical circles.

Fact: The claim is completely false.

1. What to ask: Could you please provide one double-blind, placebo-controlled study that can prove the safety and effectiveness of vaccines?

2. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific evidence on ANY study which can confirm the long-term safety and effectiveness of vaccines?

3. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific evidence which can prove that disease reduction in any part of the world, at any point in history was attributable to inoculation of populations?

4. What to ask: Could you please explain how the safety and mechanism of vaccines in the human body are scientifically proven if their pharmacokinetics (the study of bodily absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of ingredients) are never examined or analyzed in any vaccine study?

One of the most critical elements which defines the toxicity potential of any vaccine are its pharmacokinetic properties. Drug companies and health agencies refuse to consider the study, analysis or evaluation of the pharmacokinetic properties of any vaccine.

There is not one double-blind, placebo-controlled study in the history of vaccine development that has ever proven their safety, effectiveness or achievements (unless those achievements have underlined their damage to human health).

There are also no controlled studies completed in any country which have objectively proven that vaccines have had any direct or consequential effect on the reduction of any type of disease in any part of the world.

Every single study that has ever attempted to validate the safety and effectiveness of vaccines has conclusively established carcinogenic, mutagenic, neurotoxic or fertility impairments, but they won’t address those.

Claim: Preservatives and chemical additives used in the manufacture of vaccines are safe and no studies have been linked or proven them unsafe for use in humans.

Fact: The claim is completely false.

5. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific justification as to how injecting a human being with a confirmed neurotoxin is beneficial to human health and prevents disease?

6. What to ask: Can you provide a risk/benefit profile on how the benefits of injecting a known neurotoxin exceeds its risks to human health for the intended goal of preventing disease?

This issue is no longer even open to debate. It is a scientifically established fact in literally hundreds of studies that the preservatives and chemical additives in vaccines damage cells. Neurotoxicity, immune suppression, immune-mediated chronic inflammation and carcinogenic proliferation are just a few of several effects that have been observed on the human body. See a list of chemicals in vaccines.

Fortunately, the drug companies still tell us the damage vaccines have on the human body. People just don’t read them. All you have to do is look at the insert for any vaccine, and it will detail the exact ingredients, alerts and potentially lethal effects.

See my latest analysis of the Arepanrix H1N1 vaccine for an example.

Any medical professional who believes that it is justified to inject any type of neurotoxin into any person to prevent any disease is completely misguided, misinformed, deluded and ignorant of any logic regarding human health.

Claim: Once an individual is injected with the foreign antigen in the vaccine, that individual becomes immune to future infections.

Fact: The claim is completely false.

7. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific justification on how bypassing the respiratory tract (or mucous membrane) is advantageous and how directly injecting viruses into the bloodstream enhances immune functioning and prevents future infections?

8. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific justification on how a vaccine would prevent viruses from mutating?

9. What to ask: Could you please provide scientific justification as to how a vaccination can target a virus in an infected individual who does not have the exact viral configuration or strain the vaccine was developed for?

All promoters of vaccination fail to realize that the respiratory tract of humans (actually all mammals) contains antibodies which initiates natural immune responses within the respiratory tract mucosa. Bypassing this mucosal aspect of the immune system by directly injecting viruses into the bloodstream leads to a corruption in the immune system itself. As a result, the pathogenic viruses or bacteria cannot be eliminated by the immune system and remain in the body, where they will further grow and/or mutate as the individual is exposed to ever more antigens and toxins in the environment which continue to assault the immune system.

Despite the injection of any type of vaccine, viruses continue circulating through the body, mutating and transforming into other organisms. The ability of a vaccine manufacturer to target the exact viral strain without knowing its mutagenic properties is equivalent to shooting a gun at a fixed target that has already been moved from its location. You would be shooting at what was, not what is!

Flu viruses, may mutate, change or adapt several times over a period of one flu season, making the seasonal influenza vaccine 100% redundant and ineffective every single flu season. Ironically, the natural immune defenses of the human body can target these changes but the vaccines cannot.

I have never encountered one pro-vaccine advocate, whether medically or scientifically qualified, who could answer even 1 let alone all 9 of these questions. One or all of the following will happen when debating any of the above questions:

- They will concede defeat and admit they are stumped

- They will attempt to discredit unrelated issues that do not pertain to the question.

- They will formulate their response and rebuttal based on historical arguments and scientific studies which have been disproved over and over again. Not one pro-vaccine advocate will ever directly address these questions in an open mainstream venue.

It’s estimated that millions of Americans, adults and children alike, suffer with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the most common symptom of which is acid reflux.

Each year, 113.4 million prescriptions for antacids are filled, while many others are purchased over the counter. A new study, however, finds that some of the most commonly used acid reflux medications, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), may cause unwanted side effects such as bacterial infections and bone fractures in post-menopausal women.

The study, published in the May 10 issue of “Archives of Internal Medicine,” a JAMA publication, also finds that between 53 and 69 percent of these medications are being taken for inappropriate indications.

But PPIs, which include Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Aciphex and Protonix are a big business. Dr. Mitchell H. Katz, of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, says this class of drugs, with $13.9 billion in sales per year, is now the third-highest pharmaceutical seller in the United States.

“All drugs have adverse effects, but that alone is not a reason to avoid them,” writes Katz. “Rather, prior to prescribing medications, good clinicians must weigh the benefits versus the risks and the seriousness of the disease versus the seriousness of the adverse effects.”

PPIs effectively treat inflammation of the esophagus, GERD, ulcers and several other conditions. They are also often used to treat dyspepsia, or indigestion, in the absence of ulcers, inflammation or severe GERD.

Prilosec and Prevacid were once only available by prescription, but are now sold over the counter. Nexium, AcipHex and Protonix are available by prescription only.

Although antacids can relieve indigestion, new studies show that the risks of using them may outweigh the benefits, and that doctors and clinicians should be less liberal in handing out prescriptions for these medications or advising patients to go out and purchase them over the counter.

Dr. Michael D. Howell, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, and colleagues analyzed more than 100,000 patients discharged from hospitals in a five-year period. They discovered that daily proton pump inhibitor use is associated with an estimated 74 percent increase in infection with clostridium difficile, a bacteria that is often picked up in hospitals by older patients.

“The stomach juices, or acids, in the stomach usually kill off this type of bacteria,” Howell told AOL Health. Taking an antacid creates an absence of stomach acids that makes patients more susceptible to picking up the potentially lethal bacteria.

“For every 14 people that pick up this bacteria, one dies,” Howell added. “For years we thought proton pump inhibitors were completely safe. I think the main message to come out of our study is that prescribers need to pay attention to even small increases in risks.”

Howell said that in many hospitals, PPIs are given as preventative medicine to decrease the risk of possible stomach bleeding in patients that are at risk for this condition, such as those who have previously experienced bleeding ulcers or are on an aspirin regimen to reduce the risk of a heart attack.

“I would encourage my own family to ask the doctor if the drug is being given for a specific reason,” he said. “It’s true that PPIs can decrease the chance of bleeding by 80 percent, but the risk of most patients experiencing stomach bleeding is low.”

Howell says that approximately 50 percent of hospital patients are put on these drugs, totaling about 35 million people per year. And prolonged use of the drug isn’t necessary in order to experience the bad side effects. “What surprised us was that just taking the drug for a few days can increase your risk,” he added.

Last month I discussed chiropractic care, and the critical role it plays in health and well-being. Many of you asked for some suggestions on selecting a wellness-oriented chiropractor who will help you to attain your personal health goals, and maximize your potential for experiencing life.

What NOT to do.

If the best doctor for you happens to have an office nearby, that’s great. But don’t let location be the primary basis for your choice. Don’t base your selection on an attractive sign, or a large ad in the phone directory. Important factors for choosing a wellness chiropractor:

1. Ask your friends. If you have friends who share your perspective on health and wellness, ask for a recommendation. You can ask your friend candid questions about the doctor, the staff, fees, availability, and services offered. More importantly, your friend, who knows both you and the chiropractor, may be able to tell whether your health philosophies and personalities are compatible.

2. Meet the doctor. Most chiropractors will be willing to meet you for a consultation at no cost to determine whether you are a good match. Make productive use of this visit. You want to know whether the practice is right for you, and whether you feel comfortable with the doctor.

Things to ask and look for:

1. Does the doctor look healthy? If the doctor does not live a healthy lifestyle, this speaks volumes regarding their commitment to wellness. If the doctor smells of tobacco smoke, is obese, or otherwise appears unhealthy, this is a concern.

2. Do the two of you “click”? You are entering into a very special relationship. Approach it as you would any long-term commitment. Do you like each other? Does the doctor seem rushed? Do you communicate well with each other? Avoid a doctor who seems rushed, or talks down to you. You want a partner and a coach, not a surrogate parent.

3. Does the practice focus on vertebral subluxation and wellness? We experience life through our nervous systems. Physical, biochemical, and psychological distress may result in spinal subluxations, which disrupt nerve function, and compromise your ability to adapt to the environment. It is essential that this be the focus of your wellness chiropractor, since some chiropractors choose to confine their practices to the mechanical treatment of back and neck pain.

4. How you will be evaluated? The focus of chiropractic is on the nervous system, which is the master control system of your body. Fortunately, there are modern, non-invasive instruments, which permit your chiropractor to objectively evaluate the function of your nerve system. One such instrument is the Myovision Subluxation Station ™. This instrument includes a surface EMG, which measures the electrical activity in your muscles, and a thermal scanner, which evaluates the function of your autonomic nervous system. This is the part of your nerve system that controls your organs, glands, and blood vessels. The Myovision Subluxation Station™ is registered with the FDA, and the recommended protocols and reference data are from peer-reviewed journals. By establishing a baseline when you begin care, the information from the scans helps chart your progress. It also assists you and your chiropractor in determining how physical, biochemical, and psychological distress leads to subluxations. Although feeling good is important to you, your care should not be based simply on whether you have pain or other symptoms. Like dental cavities, high blood pressure, and many health conditions, spinal subluxations may exist without symptoms. Objective assessments of nerve function are a must.

5. What types of techniques are used? If you have been to a chiropractor before, you may have a preference for a specific technique. There are many different techniques in chiropractic. Some include adjustments by hand, low-force techniques, and adjustments using instruments. The important thing is that the right technique for you is available. Ask the doctor about what technique will be used if this is important to you.

6. Training. Educational and licensing standards for doctors of chiropractic are now standardized.

7. Fees. Health insurance really isn’t “health” insurance, it is illness insurance. Most health policies will only cover services that address specific conditions. If you have a specific health issue, such as back or neck pain, your insurance may pay a portion of your chiropractor’s fee. If you have no symptoms, insurance generally does not cover the cost of wellness care. After your examination, the chiropractor should explain to you the proposed course of care, and the fees and payment options. Many wellness chiropractors offer flexible payment plans and no interest financing.

8. If you have insurance, thats great if not, there are many chiropractors who serve the community by working out care plans that can fit into everyones budget. The value of chiropractic care in formulating a total strategy for health and well-being is immense. The key is finding a doctor of chiropractic whose philosophy, values, and personality are compatible with yours.

“We found that increased consumption of high fructose corn syrup was associated with scarring in the liver, or fibrosis, among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD),” said Manal Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology at Duke University Medical Center.

Her team of researchers at Duke, one of eight clinical centers in the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network, looked at 427 adults enrolled in the network. They analyzed dietary questionnaires collected within three months of the adults’ liver biopsies to determine their high fructose corn syrup intake and its association with liver scarring.

The researchers found only 19 percent of adults with NAFLD reported no intake of fructose-containing beverages, while 52 percent consumed between one and six servings a week and 29 percent consumed fructose-containing beverages on a daily basis.

An increase in consumption of fructose appeared to be correlated to increased liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD.

“We have identified an environmental risk factor that may contribute to the metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance and the complications of the metabolic syndrome, including liver injury,” Abdelmalek said.

Research Abdelmalek published in the Journal of Hepatology in 2008 showed that, within a small subset of patients, high fructose corn syrup was associated with NAFLD. Her latest research, published online in Hepatology, goes one step further and links high fructose corn syrup to the progression of liver injury.

“Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is present in 30 percent of adults in the United States,” Abdelmalek said. “Although only a minority of patients progress to cirrhosis, such patients are at increased risk for liver failure, liver cancer, and the need for liver transplant,” she explained.

You’ve probably seen the “Sweet Surprise” television commercials posted by the American Corn Grower’s Association. They challenge people to actually report what’s specifically wrong with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and say: “It’s made from corn, doesn’t have artificial ingredients, has the same amount of calories as sugar and its fine in moderation.”

The implication that HFCS is a “natural product” doesn’t really say much. And “they,” as in “You know what they say about it…” should have you questioning a thing or two.

Both of these implications are simply not true. They actually have a lot to say about why high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, and HFCS is anything but natural.

“Natural”

The FDA has challenged claims that HFCS is a natural sweetener since companies such as Pepsi are now boasting of the “real sugar” content in their sodas and companies like Cadbury and Kraft have been called out for labeling their products as “natural” when they contain HFCS.

The controversy between whether high-fructose corn syrup or sugar is natural is just a smokescreen, a distraction that attempts to blur the negative health consequences associated with both of them.

The Sugar Association and the Corn Growers and Refiners associations have been able to indulge in this controversy because the FDA had never created a standard for what is or isn’t “natural.” Although the standard still hasn’t been set, the FDA has decided that the synthetic fixing agents used to produce HFCS does prompt the agency to “object to the use of the term ‘natural’ on a product containing HFCS.”

Weight Gain

There’s another controversy blooming between the HFCS and sugar industries, and again, it’s just another moot point. A Princeton University study has claimed that HFCS causes more weight gain than refined sugar does.

Industry-sponsored scientists have been quick to criticize the methodology of the research but scientist Miriam Bocarsly points out that the work was designed to demonstrate the long-term effects of HFCS. This is so important, she says, “because you don’t eat high fructose corn syrup once; you eat it every day, probably since you were a child.”

Corn in Everything

HFCS contains more fructose than table sugar, a dangerous difference. Author Bill Sanda reports that in 1980, the average American ingested 39 pounds of fructose and 84 pounds of sucrose. In 1994, Sanda writes, it was up to 66 pounds of sucrose and 83 pounds of fructose. Today, approximately 25% of our caloric intake comes from sugars, the larger portion being fructose.

The high amount of HFCS is behind this. It’s cheap, soluble, and easy to store and transport. It’s used in bread, beer, health foods, “natural” sodas, salad dressing etc. and is fed to livestock.

In fact, “King Corn” documentary-makers Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney found that analysis of their hair samples determined the carbon in their bodies has come from corn. They posit that the extreme prevalence of HFCS in so many foodstuffs means that it’s difficult to avoid: if you took everything containing corn (and soy) off average supermarket shelves, you’d be left with only enough food to fill a small vegetable stand.

Ellis and Cheney purchased an acre of Iowan field and followed their corn from planting to harvest. They found that half of a harvest normally goes into animal feed: 60% of cattle feed is corn even though it doesn’t sustain the animals. If they weren’t pushed to slaughter quickly, most cattle would die within 6 months. Another third of corn, Ellis and Cheney found, goes to ethanol and exports.

Farmers used to be subsidized to let their fields go unplanted and un-harvested in order to boost agricultural economy. Today, instead, they’re paid to overproduce and that’s why HFCS and other corn-based products dominate the food market.

Most corn used to make HFCS is genetically modified and genetically modified enzymes are used to process it.

The Fructose Factor

Before the 1970’s, most of the sugar Americans imbibed came from sucrose derived from sugar cane or beets. Sucrose is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. When the industry began to make sweeteners from corn, they were able to create HFCS with 50/50 ratios of fructose and glucose or as much as 80% fructose compared to 20% glucose.

Dr. Meira Fields, of the US Department of Agriculture, has been studying the effects of dietary sugar for many years. She and her colleagues found that when rats are fed sugar as a carbohydrate (especially if their diets are deficient in copper, as most American diets are) they developed diseases in their vital organs: liver, heart, pancreas and testes, and died before they fully matured.

Fields decided to determine whether it was glucose or fructose that was behind the diseases. The rats that were given glucose were unaffected while the fructose group developed anemia, high cholesterol and enlarged hearts. Testicular development was affected, and female rats, although less affected than their male counterparts, were unable to produce live young.

Fructose was once thought to be beneficial to diabetics because it is absorbed less quickly than glucose. In fact, scientists know today that fructose is more disease-promoting than glucose.

Dr Fields explains that “The medical profession thinks fructose is better for diabetics than sugar but every cell in the body can metabolize glucose. However, all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. The livers of the rats on the high fructose diet looked like the livers of alcoholics, plugged with fat and cirrhotic.”

The Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup

The fructose in naturally occurring sugars binds to other sugars. HFCS contains “free” or unbound fructose that robs the body of copper, chromium and magnesium.

HFCS is linked to high cholesterol and blood clots.

It also reduces the action of white blood cells, compromising the immune system.

Fructose browns foods seven times faster than glucose, a process called the Maillard reaction. As food browns, it loses protein and contributes to toxicity in the body. This, in turn, reduces the absorption and use of essential nutrients such as free amino acids and zinc. Some foods with the Maillard reaction are carcinogenic and mutate DNA.

Nutritionist Nancy Appleton says that fructose increases uric acid concentrations, a possible indicator of heart disease.

Fructose increases lactic acid levels in the blood.

Fructose interacts with oral contraceptives.

Fructose increases kidney calcium levels and excretion of calcium, iron, phosphorous, magnesium and zinc much more so than sucrose.

Fructose may affect collagen and contribute to faster aging.

Fructose is metabolized by the liver, not all body cells, so it has a different effect on insulin than table sugar does. It reduces the affinity of insulin for insulin receptors so that higher levels of insulin are needed to process glucose.

Fructose is converted to fat more readily than other sugar.

Fructose raises triglyceride levels.

The liver’s energy sources are compromised by conversion of fructose.

Fructose interferes with copper metabolism, hampering the production of elastin and collagen. Copper deficiencies can lead to anemia, bone density problems, heart and liver problems, blood vessel weakness, high cholesterol levels and an inability to control blood sugar.

HFCS is a deadly part of the American diet and the rivalry between corn and sugar producers is a moot one.

Elizabeth Abbot, author of Sugar: A Bittersweet History, says “The debate about which one is better for you is a false debate, because neither of them is good for you. By having cane sugar, you’re not doing yourself a great big favor. Not so much sugar is what we should be striving for.”
